Brûlerie Santropol prides itself by offering 100% certified organic and fair-trade coffee, working with certified organic and fair-trade coffee producers in different countries. Our objective is to offer the finest possible spectrum of roasted coffees while working toward a fairer distribution of revenue, empowerment, and mutual respect among all participants in the chain, from farmer to consumer. We believe that social and economic justice and environmental stewardship are essential to global political and economic viability; that a sustainable global and local economy must, like a sustainable family, be built on principles of non-violence, transparency, equity, and respect for our environment.
Brûlerie Santropol takes the health of our planet to heart. As an importer, roaster, and distributor of fair-trade organic coffee, we are mindful that everything we do has an impact on the environment.
With each pound of green coffee, we purchase, we contribute to a reforestation fund in our ongoing commitment to reduce our carbon footprint.
We also compost the jute coffee-bean bags used in the intercontinental transport of our coffee, as well as the organic waste created in the roasting process.
We continue our quest for packaging that would fulfill our criteria of ensuring the quality and extended lifespan of our product while respecting our desire to reduce non- recyclable and non-compostable waste.
The name Santropol has been around since 1976, but we could not have survived and flourished without the support of the community. The restaurant may have lent the strength of its name to a meals-on-wheels service, helping to get it rolling in terms of equipment and technical support. Now Santropol Roulant has become a respected independent entity thanks to dedicated staff, volunteers, and financial partners. This makes the founders of Café Santropol proud and instills in our heart’s faith in the possibilities of future projects.
Getting involved also means supporting academic and community groups by donating coffee and lending equipment for their meetings and conferences, and we systematically offer discounts to non-profit organizations.
FAIR TRADE -
HOW DOES IT WORK?
The primary mission of fair trade is to develop a more ethical and equitable alternative to free trade (also known as the Market), which generally dominates commercial exchanges of commodities between developed and developing countries. This almost always works to the disadvantage of the developing producer country.
This alternative system tries to ensure that:
● Producers are paid higher prices than those prevailing in the conventional market for their products;
● A minimum price is set at a level calculated to cover production costs, but which also permits a relatively reasonable standard of living for producers.
● Producer cooperatives are governed transparently and democratically.
● Contracts between buyers and sellers are drawn up in an equitable manner in order to prevent abuse or exploitation.
● Credit is extended to producers prior to the delivery of their product,
● Fair and reasonable labour standards are respected; and
● Organic cultivation is encouraged and rewarded with adequate financial compensation.
